A PLACE FOR SHARING...
You know you've reached paradise when you cross the
McKinley Washington Bridge on Highway 174 and see Edisto Island, a rural
Sea Island enhanced by its salt-marsh and river views. At this point,
you're just a few minutes away from Edisto Beach, a four and a half mile
stretch of sand bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
Edisto Beach has successfully achieved a balance
between existing as both a small Sea Island community and a family vacation
destination by catering to year-round residents with the necessary town
services while at the same time supporting a growing economy that includes
rental properties, retail shops, and local restaurants.
As a visitor you'll find everything from shrimping,
shellin, and crabbing to shagging, golf and art exhibits. But in
spite of the various activities on Edisto Beach, it's the scenery ; unspoiled
marshes, live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, winding creeks and
of course the beach, known for the spectacular sunsets.
Another favorite aspect of Edisto Beach are the
many sporting activities on the island including tennis, golf, parasailing,
fishing, sailing, bicycling, bird watching, boating. Edisto Beach
Golf Club an 18-hole championship golf course along with the Edisto Beach
Raquet Club's tennis programs make Edisto Beach a favorite destination
for avid players.
For those who would rather exercise the mind than
the body, there's always the Edisto Island Historical Preservation Society
Museum, which features a variety of exhibits and special programs throughout
the year.
The Edisto Beach community also supports several
clubs and organizations such as the Edisto Beach Property Owners Association;
the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, which is dedicated to preserving the
scenic views and vistas of Edisto Island; the Edisto Art guild; the Edisto
Lions Club; The Edisto Players, a local theater group; and The Edistoics,
a supper club that features a different guest speaker each month.
The Town of Edisto Beach operates under a mayor-council
form of government with elections for the mayor and four council members
every four years. Other town services include police and fire
departments, a sea rescue program, building inspection and a planning commission.
The Town of Edisto Beach also sponsors a Tabletop Hurricane Forum each
storm season. Edisto Beach Town Hall can be reached at (843) 869-2505
for more information.
EDISTO ISLAND
Bounded by the North and South Edisto Rivers, the Atlantic Ocean and
the Intercoastal Waterway, Edisto is located 40 miles south of Charleston
and east of Walterboro, SC. An aura of mystic beauty hovers over
the Island and its historic homes and churches. Spanish moss decks
the massive live oaks and magnolias, yellow jasmine and white Cherokee
rose give a loveliness to dark tangled jungles of Palmetto, myrtle, yucca
and jack vine. Tidal marshes stretch wide and unspoiled with swaying
grey-green grass hiding the twists and turns of salt creeks and inlets.
Lovely Beaches open the way to St. Helena Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
This enchanting place for all seasons welcomes you to spend a day, week
or a lifetime.
